Hombre del Mundo
Hombre del Mundo
Lyrics by Jamie O’Reilly
Music by Michael P. Smith
Recorded by Rob Arendt
from Swimming Deeper, 2000
I wrote this lyric in the early nineties, when Gipsy Kings were an international phenomena
and I was studying Middle Eastern dance. We often added flamenco-style moves to the
dance classes. In a flight of fancy, the woman imagines a new world for herself when she hears a Spanish guitar playing.
“Man of the world, play something sad for me. Something sweet.”
Michael set the lyrics with a strong Latin-feel. He plays two guitars and bass on the recording.
In January ’25 I will have the pleasure of working with the fine guitarist Steve Vazquez, who performs the song with me, paired with Recuerdos de la Alhambra, a famous piece for classical guitar by Francisco Tárrega, Spanish composer.
