When the sun was low and the air was cool,(from Edgar Lee Master’s Spoon River Anthology)
Stopping to club the walnut tree
Standing leafless against a flaming west.
Now, the smell of the autumn smoke,
And the dropping acorns,
And the echoes about the vales
Bring dreams of life. They hover over me.
They question me…”
A Note From Michael
The official beginning of old-fogey-ness would be when you don’t want to dress up for Hallowe’en anymore…so I’m there now, alas, but there is always the beautiful book October Country by Ray Bradbury to get me into that late October mood. November Twilight by Julie London captures a little of what’s in store, but things are getting pretty businesslike by the time November rolls around, especially in Chicago. I’m doing Lamb’s Retreat AND the Acoustic Renaissance series, AND the Lake County Folk Club, all in November, so I feel pretty grateful enough for Thanksgiving. Check out michaelpetersmith.com for the dates; that’s where I go to remind myself, otherwise I’d just lay around till Christmas, and not dress up for that either. Supposedly John Lennon was so nearsighted he thought an outdoor Nativity scene was a dice game outside the church. Bless you, John.
