“Work produces meaning as well as resources. For many, perhaps most people, it is central to their understanding of who they are. ” (Ben Clarke, Chicago Review of Books article)
Cultural Arts activist and performer Jamie O’Reilly will take part in Chicago Dramatists’ Back to the Studs, a two-night theatrical celebration of Mark Larson’s new book, Working in the 21st Century: An Oral History of American Work in a Time of Social and Economic Transformation ––an homage to Studs Terkel’s 1974 best selling book WORKING.
Mark Larson, who is also the author of Ensemble, has taken up Studs’ original socio-historical purpose by interviewing over a hundred people about the work they do—day in and day out—across a vast spectrum of job titles, wages, and geography.
Spanning two evenings, the event includes performances from the book, live music, round table discussions and book signing.
Back to the Studs takes place at Chicago Dramatists, Russ Tutterow Theater. 798 N. Aberdeen, Chicago, on Fri May 17 and Sat May 18 at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available for purchase through the events calendar: https://chicagodramatists.org/my-calendar/?month=5&yr=2024
On Friday, May 17, Jamie O’Reilly will be part of a roundtable discussion with Mark Larson and other Chicago Luminaries: Kerry Reid (The Reader), Natalie Moore (WBEZ) and Chicago Dramatist’s Carson Grace Becker, following the performance.
All proceeds will help fund Chicago Dramatists’ mission to nurture and grow the next generation of new American plays, and to support and uplift playwrights at all levels of their careers. For more information about Chicago Dramatists got to: https://chicagodramatists.org/
